This spring, the Printmaking department at the Corcoran College of Art + Design will debut its 25th annual Printmaking Portfolio at Civilian Art Projects in Washington, D.C. Characterized by student participation, the portfolios are comprised of works from students and faculty in the College’s Master of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and Continuing Education programs and exhibited in a local gallery.

Take Your Dream and Cut it in Half will be on view at Civilian Art Projects March 24 through April 3. The exhibition will present 32 new original screenprints, lithographs, etchings, handmade papers, letterpress, relief and digital prints.

The public is invited to attend a reception on Wednesday, March 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. and a literary reading by Corcoran faculty and students on April 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Civilian Art Projects. The exhibition hours include Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m., Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., and Tuesday by appointment.

“Participants address the annual theme -- this year’s is Take Your Dream and Cut It In Half -- in the creation of their innovative images, and interpretations are as varied as the individual artists themselves,” said Lynn Sures, Fine Art faculty member, CCA+D.

ABOUT THE PORTFOLIO

The annual print portfolio offers positive opportunities for the Corcoran student artists. The exhibition at Civilian Art Projects is an opportunity the art community and collectors to view student work in a professional setting. Portfolios from previous years have been purchased for private and public collections alike, including the Library of Congress and The Corcoran Gallery of Art.

Organized by department coordinator Georgia Deal, for 25 years the annual print portfolio has showcased the work of MA, BFA and CE students and their faculty annually. This year, 33 students and faculty have been involved in each aspect of the production of this portfolio – from choosing a theme, editioning the prints, designing and producing the title sheet, portfolio case and invitation, planning the reception, and assisting the gallery with hanging the show.

The March 31 reception provides an opportunity for visitors to meet the students and faculty and to learn about the prints from the artists in-person—opening a window into their creative processes. The Corcoran’s literary reading in the gallery space highlights its popular writing program, which has had a longstanding relationship with the printmaking program.
